Dateless Number Plates

Dateless plates do not have the same restrictions as other plate types - they can be assigned to any vehicle. They are made up of a group of up to 3 letters and up to 4 numbers, either way around - i.e 381 KWP or KWP 381.

You will get the best results to view if you search for either letters OR numbers - i.e. searching for any BAZ plate or any plate with a 911 number. Registrations with fewer letters or fewer numbers are rarer than 3 letters with 4 numbers

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS WANT TO KNOW

There are some questions that we are asked all the time about the purchase of a personalised registration plate and so we've listed them here to help you

How complicated is buying a private number plate?

Buying a personalised plate is actually very simple, the only difficult part is choosing what plate you want from the millions of options you have available. Remember, we’re always here to help so if you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch.

What is the process for purchasing a private plate?

Once you’ve chosen the plate you want to buy, you can place your order either directly through the website, by clicking the BUY button next to your chosen plate, and following the instructions, or alternatively, you can give us a call and we can talk you through the process.

How much do personalised number plates cost?

There are certainly some pricey number plates out there. The most expensive number plate in the UK to-date was ‘25 O’ which sold at an auction in November 2014 for £400,000 – with VAT and auctioneer’s fees, the total price ended up being £518,480. But while we have plenty of high-end plates for those who wish to splash out, you don’t actually have to be loaded to own a private plate. We have plenty of cheap plates for sale, with prices starting from just £20 (+fees). So whatever your budget, you can still be the proud owner of a personalised number plate.

How do I decide which private number plate to get?

Our clever online search facility is really useful for helping you pick out the plate that’s just perfect for you. With around 60 million plates available, selecting just one can seem like a rather daunting task, so we’ve made it as easy as possible for you. Just think of any words or numbers you’d like as part of your plate and type it into our number plate search box, then our search engine will show you lots of options that you might like. We’ll automatically work out number / letter substitutions for you, so for example, if you searched for BEN, not only would you see BEN plates, but also B3N plates. If you’ve got your heart set on a particular plate but just can’t find it, then do give us a call and we’ll see if we can help you track it down or find something similar for you.

How long does it take to register a new private plate?

Our decades of experience with number plate transfers ensures a smooth and speedy transaction. If you have your V5C to hand, and it has your name and address on it, as long as your vehicle is currently taxed we can often complete your transfer while you’re on the phone. But even if this isn’t possible, transfer usually only takes around 5-7 days.

How do I get my new number plates onto my vehicle?

When you buy your plates from us, we can also send you a set of high quality physical plates for just £20 +VAT. You’ll need to wait until the DVLA has updated its records with your new plate details, so when you receive your new V5C you can proceed with the changeover. Changing your number plate shouldn’t be too tricky. You’ll need to remove your old plates which will either be attached with screws or with double-sided sticky tape, then you can fix your new plates on with your method of choice. Of course if you don’t fancy doing the job yourself, you can always take it to your local mechanic who should be able to fit them for you quickly and cheaply.

Will a private plate affect my insurance?

A private plate isn’t classed as a modification, so it shouldn’t affect your insurance validity or price. However, you will need to inform your insurance company of the change of plate so it’s wise to double check when you contact them to be totally sure you’re still adhering to their terms and conditions.

Do private plates expire or need to be renewed?

Once you’ve bought your private plate, it’s yours to keep for as long as you want. You only pay once and there are no further fees. However, if you put your plate on a retention certificate, ie. not on a vehicle, then this will need to renewed every ten years.

What happens to my old number plate when I get a new private plate?

Your old number plate is not reused elsewhere, it still remains linked to the vehicle. If you sell your vehicle but want to keep your private plate for your new vehicle or wish to sell the plate separately, the original number plate will then be reassigned.

Can I sell my private plate with my car?

Yes, when you sell your car you can sell it complete with the private plate except on rare occasions when the plate is deemed to be ‘non-transferable’. Selling a car with a private plate on may well encourage a higher value sale. However, do consider the option of selling the plate and the vehicle individually as this could work out to be the most lucrative option. If this interests you then please get in touch with us as we offer a fee-free number plate selling service. We offer free valuations too, with many people finding that their plates have retained their value, or even increased in value since they bought them.

Can I buy a private plate for someone else?

Yes, it’s very easy to buy a plate for someone else’s vehicle. The process can be done simply online or by post via the DVLA. Private plates make brilliant gifts, the ultimate in personalised presents. We also sell gift vouchers so you can give the gift of private plates that way too if you think the recipient would prefer to choose their own plate.

Do private number plates have any real use?

Private plates are a lot of fun, and are great for personalising your vehicle, and as you can (usually) transfer them from vehicle to vehicle you may never have to learn what your new vehicle number plate is ever again, However there are some practical uses for them too. If you run a business, then private plates related to your job are a great advertising tool. For instance, a pet groomer could have a DOG plate, a baker might love a BUN plate or how about a CUT plate for a mobile hairdresser or a DOC plate for a doctor?
