So much can be expressed in one teeny tiny image that would take far too long to explain in a message. It’s also the perfect way to make sure that your tone is understood. It’s hard to put across that you’re making a joke or being sarcastic, or that you really are rather cross when you’re not talking to some directly but emojis give you all the tools you need. Over 700 million emojis are used in Facebook posts every single day, with the most popular emojis being the face with tears of joy and the smiling face with heart eyes. Every day a massive 900 million Facebook Messenger messages are sent using only emojis and no text at all. Who needs words when you have emojis? The day of the year that most emojis are used is New Year’s Eve. Emojis from past to present We started out with the humble emoticon 🙂 You may think they were first created with the rise in popularity of the Internet in the 90s, but they were first used in 1881 in Puck magazine ;P The first known use of emoticons online was in 1982. Carnegie Mellon University had an online message board and it was decided to use 🙂 for joke posts and 🙁 for serious posts, to make it easier for users to understand what type of post they were looking at. Emojis as we know them today were invented in 1998 in Japan. The word emoji was created from two Japanese words, ‘e’ meaning picture and ‘moji’ meaning character. Emoji personalised number plates Emojis crop up everywhere these days. It would probably be impossible to spend a day without seeing one, unless you were camping in a wilderness without your mobile phone. In Queensland Australia, they’ve gone one step further and you can now choose to add an emoji to your number plate! Australian drivers get a choice of five emojis, smile, heart eyes, sunglasses, wink or laugh out loud.
