If you go for a night out on 17th March, you know the atmosphere is going to be amazing. Pick a bar with live music and you’ll be able to dance the night away with a pint or two of Guinness of course! Of course it’s an Irish feast day, but as the Irish spread all over the world, so did the tradition of celebrating St Patrick’s Day. Now it’s recognised everywhere from Russia to Japan and it’s very popular in America where they even dye the Chicago river green. It takes 40 tons of dye to get the shade of the river just right! But did you know, the original colour associated with St Patrick was blue? The colour green was only added into the festivities when the day was linked to the Irish independence movement in the late 18th century. Their colour was green. Not only is green not the true colour of St Patrick, but his real name was Maewyn Succan. He changed his name to Patricius when he became a priest. So we should all be wearing blue and celebrating St Succan’s Day! However, who cares? We like it just the way it is!
