Over the phone, an M can sound like an N or an S can sound like an F. Now if you’ve chosen a wonderful plate as a birthday gift for your wife Sue, perhaps 10 SUE, you don’t want the disappointment of ending up with 10 FUE! So that’s why we ask all our phone customers to confirm the plate they want using the phonetic alphabet. Originally developed for the aviation industry, the phonetic alphabet is widely used all over the world and it can come in very handy when you’re on the phone, especially if the line isn’t perfectly clear. Ever got frustrated giving the spelling of your name or your postcode over the phone and the person at the other end just isn’t getting it? Learn the phonetic alphabet and banish this frustration! It’s a useful skill to have, not just for ordering number plates, so why not get the whole family to learn the phonetic alphabet, you can test each other until you’ve got it spot on.
