HomeMotoring UKChecking your brake fluid Jayne Henry August 26, 2014 Motoring UK A recent report shows that more than a quarter of cars are running with defective brake fluid. This is a serious issue and can cause the brakes to fail, causing accident and injury. You should replace your brake fluid every two years anyway but do check it in between too. Don’t be fooled into thinking that because your car passed the MOT that the brake fluid is okay too, as the MOT will not cover this. To check your brake fluid, locate and open the brake fluid reservoir. Check the level of the fluid, if it is within half an inch of the top then you’re okay, if not, you need to fill it up. Also look at the colour of the fluid, if it is dark in colour it means it has deteriorated so it needs to be replaced. Be careful when checking your brake fluid as it is toxic. Rags with brake fluid on and fluid cans should be disposed of at a toxic waste centre. Be careful not to let children or pets anywhere near it. It will also destroy your paintwork, so be very careful! If it’s not a job you fancy doing yourself any garage will be able to do it for you.
