  • Accelerate gently and smoothly.
  • Maintain a sensible, steady speed.
  • Leave plenty of distance between you and the vehicle in front.
  • Use your gearbox to help slow down. Avoid sudden braking/acceleration.
  • Check your tyre treads – 1.6mm depth is the legal minimum.
  • If you have an older car, make sure you replace the anti-freeze.
  • Check screen wash fluid and wipers.
  • Carry a shovel, blanket and food.
  • Plan your journey in advance. Check the weather forecast.
  • Don’t drive when it’s not necessary.

Best cars to drive:

4x4s for example,  Land Rover, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota or Land Cruiser.

Front-wheel-drive for example, Mini, Honda Jazz, Ford Focus.

Worst cars to drive:

Rear-wheel drive cars ncluding BMWs and Porsches, and any automatic.
